Conference 2026

Critical Industry Society Conference connects sectors essential to economic growth

The Critical Industry Society (CIS) Conference showcased how key industrial sectors are responding to the challenges and opportunities presented by an evolving construction market. Discussions highlighted the cyclical nature of demand and supply across industries, demonstrating how market conditions fluctuate seasonally and annually.

Held at the York Events Centre on 9 July 2026, the conference brought together a diverse audience of industry leaders, government representatives and emerging professionals, providing a valuable platform for knowledge sharing and collaboration.

A central focus of the CIS is the development and encouragement of young people entering critical industries—sectors that are often overlooked in favour of more fashionable career paths. As part of this commitment, four new moderators were introduced to support the conference proceedings. Under the guidance of CIS Chairman Richard Driffill, they performed admirably, confidently introducing presenters and contributing to the professionalism of the event.

The conference concluded with a presentation from last year’s moderator cohort, the “Class of 2025.” Having gained a year of industry experience, these young professionals demonstrated increased confidence, maturity, and strong camaraderie. Their progress highlighted the success of the CIS’s commitment to nurturing future talent and reinforced the importance of investing in the next generation of industry leaders.
The capability, enthusiasm and professionalism displayed by both the current and former moderators shows the future of critical industries is in safe hands.

One of the standout young moderators of 2025, Lee Smith of Hatfield Energy, was honoured with the Rising Star Award. He joined Hatfield Energy just over a year ago with limited exposure to heavy industrial sectors. He has embraced every opportunity to expand his knowledge and develop a deep understanding of the complexities involved in industrial commodity trading, against a backdrop of major global events.
